Amtrak has announced that it plans to spend $55 million this summer on infrastructure improvement work in the Northeast Corridor between New York and Washington.
The work includes replacing 40 track switches throughout New York and the northern and southern Mid-Atlantic regions; and updating up to 25 miles of track in the southern Mid-Atlantic.
Most of the work will be done at night or weekend nights to minimize disruption of scheduled Amtrak service.
In a news release Amtrak said the project work once completed should reduce the likelihood of lengthy train delays and improve ride quality.
Train schedules have been adjusted to account for the work and to avoid conflicts with other commuter agencies, Amtrak said.
