California Zephyr in Colorado

It is late June 1988. The photographer and a friend had ridden Amtrak’s California Zephyr to Denver to spend a week railfanning Denver & Rio Grande Western lines in Colorado.

They managed to catch Amtrak Nos. 5 and 6 numerous times on the Moffat Tunnel route. In those days three F40PH locomotives was the standard motive power consist.

In the top photograph, No. 6 is cruising along the Colorado River in Byers Canyon. In the middle, No. 5 is coming into Winter Park as it exits Moffat Tunnel. In the bottom image, the westbound Zephyr is at Rollins, Colorado.

Crossing Over in Alliance

Amtrak’s westbound Pennsylvanian is crossing over to the track closest to the boarding platform in Alliance, Ohio.

The image was made on May 16, 1999. The Pennsylvanian no longer operates west of Pittsburgh but Alliance continues to be served by Amtrak’s Chicago-Washington Capitol Limited.

An Amtrak Birthday Treat

It is Nov. 13, 1998. The eastbound Pennsylvanian is stopped in the Cleveland Amtrak station, having begun service a week earlier.

The photographer is standing in a parking garage overlooking Conrail’s Lakefront Line.

In the background the stadium that will host the expansion Cleveland Browns franchise is under construction.

He said getting this photo of Amtrak train No. 44 was a birthday present that he gave himself.

The Pennsylvanian in Gallitzin in 1994

It is May 30, 1994, in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania. Amtrak’s westbound Pennsylvanian has just popped out of Gallitzin Tunnel en route to Pittsburgh from New York.

Gallitzin Tunnel is the northern most of the then three tunnels in Gallitzin on the former Pennsylvania Railroad mainline between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

The tunnel on the right is the Allegheny Tunnel. During the summer of 1994 an enlargement project was begun to double track and enlarge this tunnel to accommodate double-stacked container trains.

When the work was completed in the summer of 1995 the Gallitzin Tunnel was closed.

The tunnels in Gallitzin are not all that has changed. The Pennsylvanian is no longer pulled by F40PH locomotives and no longer has material handling cars. But Amfleet equipment is still standard.

Amtrak Memories From a July 1993 East Coast Trip

In July 1993, the photographer and a friend ventured East from their homes in Northeast Ohio on a photography expedition.

Among their stops were Princeton Junction, New Jersey, on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. They also stopped on their way home at Horseshoe Curve and caught Amtrak’s Broadway Limited.

Much has changed with Amtrak’s motive power since then. In the early 1990s Northeast Corridor trains were still pulled by AEM-7 locomotives and long-distance trains outside the corridor were handled by F40PH locomotives.

In the top photograph the Silver Meteor comes thundering by Princeton Junction, led by a GE E60 electric engine.

Next up the Pennsylvanian makes an appearance hauling a deadheading slumbercoach.

The last image from Princeton Junction shows the Silver Star.

State of the Cardinal in 1987

I’ve long thought that the halcyon days for Amtrak’s Cardinal were in the late 1980s to early 1990s.

Sure, the train only operated three days a week, just as it still does today, but the level of service provided was much higher then it would become starting in 1995 when it was assigned Superliner equipment and reduced to a Chicago-Washington operation.

In the late 1980s, Nos. 50 and 51 operated with two sleeping cars, one of which was a slumber coach. The fare was reasonable enough that I could afford to buy a slumbercoach room for travel between Chicago and Indianapolis.

The Cardinal also still had a full-service dining car during this era.

We Interrupt Your Errands for an Amtrak Train

The photographer reported that he was running errands on Thursday morning when he learned that Amtrak’s eastbound Lake Shore Limited was running more than two hours late.

Some quick calculations found that he could be trackside in Painesville, Ohio, on the CSX Erie West Subdivision that Amtrak No. 48 uses in about a minute after making its scheduled stop at the post office.

He waited five minutes before No. 48 came charging past with Phase III P42DC heritage unit No. 145 on the point.

No. 48 was late because it was stuck behind the eastbound Capitol Limited after it struck a vehicle at a grade crossing in Ligonier, Indiana, on late Wednesday night.

The driver of the vehicle was killed. Police said he pulled onto the tracks in front of Amtrak No. 30.

Will the Lansing Ever Play in Lansing?

The Viewliner diners that Amtrak has taken delivery of in recent years and continues to receive from CAF USA are named after state capital cities.

In many instances those cities are not on the Amtrak map. Some haven’t been for years, i.e., Columbus; and some have never been served by Amtrak, i.e., Dover, Delaware.

Lansing is an interesting case. Amtrak passes through the capital of Michigan but the station is located in East Lansing.

The city is served by the Blue Water, which has either an Amfleet or Horizon food service car.

Given that, it seems unlikely that diner Lansing will ever see its namesake city unless . . .

The Lansing could pass through Lansing if it ever gets assigned to the Blue Water to help meet a Canadian National-mandated minimum axle count.

For now, though, the Lansing is assigned to eastern long-distance trains. It is shown in Cleveland on the eastbound Lake Shore Limited where it was serving as the lounge for sleeping car passengers.

Rapidly Vanishing Scene

Workers have been steadily removing the venerable Pennsylvania Railroad position light signals from the Norfolk Southern mainline between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Photographer Edward Ribinskas traveled to Altoona and vicinity last month to catch the eastbound Pennsylvanian passing the signal bridge in Summerhill.

If you look in the distance you’ll see an eastbound NS freight coming on the near track. Fortunately for Ed, his timing turned out to be just right in getting this scene.

Getting Lucky

Photographer Edward Ribinskas describes this photograph of Amtrak’s eastbound Lake Shore Limited as getting lucky.

Luck was with him in a couple of ways. It started with No. 48 leaving Chicago several hours late in the middle of the night.

Had No. 48 left on time or nearly on time it would have passed through Northeast Ohio in darkness. Of course those aboard the Lake Shore didn’t consider its tardy departure from Chicago as being lucky.

The other luck that with Ed was that an eastbound Norfolk Southern train with Union Pacific motive power came along at the same time as Amtrak, but not too far ahead to block it.

The image was made on Feb. 9 at Davis Road just east of Perry, Ohio.
