Amtrak Restores Fare Discounts for Veterans

August 29, 2019

Amtrak has restored fare discounts for military veterans, a 10 percent off discount that is available systemwide.

The discontinuance of the veteran’s fare discount in March 2018 had been widely criticized.

In a news release, Amtrak said the discount will apply to active duty military personnel as well as veterans of the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.

The discount applies to standard fares in coach and Acela Business Class but is not valid on weekday Acela service.

It cannot be used with Saver fares, non-Acela business class, first class, or sleeping-car accommodations.

Other terms and restrictions may apply and are spelled out on the Amtrak website.

Veterans Wants Amtrak Discounts Reinstated

April 16, 2018

Veterans groups are pushing back against Amtrak’s termination of ticket discounts for military veterans.

They’ve launched a petition at change.org seeking to pressure Amtrak into restoring the discounts, which were ended in late March.

At issue is a program formerly known as Veterans Advantage, which offered discounts of 15 percent to members and their families.

Amtrak continues to offer fare discounts to active duty military members.

The Veterans Advantage program, which began in February 2001, ended along with standing discounts for members of AAA and the National Association of Railroad Passengers, now known as the Rail Passengers Association.

Amtrak has said that is has ended the discounts in favor of discounted Saver fares that require purchase at least 14 days in advance of travel as well as periodic fare sales.
