Empire Builder in Portland

The Empire Builder is well known as a Chicago-Seattle train, but it also has a section that splits at Spokane, Washington, and operates to Portland, Oregon.

In the photo above Train No. 27 has arrived at Portland Union Station and discharged its passengers.

The equipment will be turned, cleaned and restocked before going out later today as Train No. 28.

P42DC No. 1 not only led No. 27 into Portland but it also will lead No. 28 out. At Spokane, No. 1 will become the lead unit for the combined Empire Builder all the way to Chicago.

No. 29 Had Locomotive No. 1

The westbound Capitol Limited has reached the end of the line at Chicago Union Station.

Passengers and disembarking and the crew is looking forward to going off the clock.

As I made my way toward the station head house I turned to make a photograph of the lead locomotive of No. 29, which on this day was P42DC No. 1.

Not many railroads have a locomotive No. 1 but I have photos of Amtrak No. 1 and CSX No. 1.

On an adjacent track is a Metra commuter train.

Empire Builder in Portland

Amtrak P42DC No. 1 waits to pull the Empire Builder out of Portland Union Station on a July 1999 afternoon. Known as the “baby Builder” due to its four-car consist, No. 28 will connect with the Seattle section in the middle of the night in Spokane, Washington.

It will offers its passengers a scenic ride along the Columbia River not long after leaving Portland.

Parked behind the Empire Builder on the same track is a Talgo train used in Portland-Seattle Cascades service.

Amtrak No. 1 on No. 380 at Highlands

There is something special about number one. Numero Uno often is used to designate the winner of something, often a sports team that won a championship.

Not many railroads have locomotives with roster numbers in the single digits. Most Amtrak locomotive roster numbers are three digits but an exception was made for the P42DC fleet, which began with No. 1

There is nothing out of the ordinary about P42DC No. 1 other than its number. Nonetheless, I was excited to see it leading the Illinois Zephyr past Highlands on the BNSF raceway in Chicago a few years ago.

Just over a year later I would see No. 1 again, this time in Portland Oregon. It would lead the Portland section of the Empire Builder eastward and I would ride behind it all the way to Chicago.
