Del Mar Bluffs Collapse Threatens Rail Service

Emergency repairs have been made to the Del Mar Bluffs after a collapse last weekend that threatened rail service to San Diego.

A 15-mph speed limit was placed on Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner and Coaster commuter trains.

The slowdown is viewed as a temporary measure while the North County Transit District and the San Diego Association of Governments assess the extent and timing of repair work needed.

The collapse came within 35 feet of the tracks. The bluffs have long been subject to erosion and stabilization work.

Proposals for further stabilization work are before the U.S. Surface Transportation Board although that case is on hold while the various parties involved in the dispute seek to negotiate a plan agreeable to all.
