SW Chief Dining Service Reportedly Suspended

An online report indicates that full dining service on Amtrak’s Chicago-Los Angeles Southwest Chief has been suspended.

The report said sleeping car passengers are receiving boxed meals. Presumably the cafe car remains open to sell food and beverages to coach passengers.

A post at a railfan chat sight reported seeing dark windows in the dining car of No. 3 when it made its station stop at La Plata, Missouri, at about 8 p.m.

Amtrak has not indicated on its website if full service dining has been suspended on any or all sections of Nos. 3 and 4.

The carrier had shortened the route of the California Zephyr to Chicago-Denver earlier after a crew member tested positive for COVID-19.

An Amtrak executive indicated in a recent town hall meeting with employees that dining cars are practicing social distancing by ending the practice of communal seating.
