NS Says Trains Are Moving Faster

Norfolk Southern said that in the past week it has increased its average train speed by 28 percent.

Its most recent report showed a 22.8-mph average train speed that was the highest it has seen since spring 2017.

The report said this was 20 percent above the 2018 average speed of 19 mph.
Terminal dwell, which measures the amount of time freight cars spend in yards, dropped to 25.1 hours last week, down 6 percent.

In the first three months of 2018, dwell time was above 30 hours in 10 NS yards. Now just two NS terminals have dwell times greater than 30 hours.
The number of cars online has fallen nearly 4 percent even as NS traffic volume is up 16 percent.
