Marks Depot Nears Completion

The new Amtrak station in Marks, Mississippi, will open on May 4, which also coincides with the inauguration of service by Amtrak’s City of New Orleans between Chicago and New Orleans.

The station was funded in part by a grant of $500,000 from the Federal Highway Administration with a 20 percent local match from Quitman County.

The local match was met with $150,000 from the Mississippi Development Authority and $300,000 from the Delta Regional Authority.

Quitman County Administrator Velma Wilson creation of an Amtrak station in Marks had been in the works for more than 20 years.

“Amtrak and Canadian National negotiated and an agreement was reached for Amtrak to stop on the main line in Marks, which was more economical for Quitman County,” Wilson said. “It is a regional stop and I think that’s one reason we were able to get it done.”
