Amtrak Adds Additional Pacific Surfliner

Standing room only conditions have prompted Amtrak and a Southern California transportation agency to add an additional Pacific Surfliner roundtrip north of Los Angeles.

The additional train and its 1,000 seats began on Saturday to serve a region that has been isolated after mudslides led to the closing of Highway 101 to the region around Santa Barbara, California.

The Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor Agency said Amtrak has been the only practical option for commuting since the mudslide closed roads.

The new trains, Nos. 765 and 778, will use Horizon fleet equipment that had been recently deployed to operate between Los Angeles and San Diego.

The new train will depart Los Angeles at 8:15 a.m. and leave Santa Barbara to return to LA at 12:07 p.m.

Union Pacific agreed to host the train on a temporary basis.
