Amtrak Plans McCook Depot Improvements

The McCook, Nebraska, city council recently learned that Amtrak wants to occupy a city right-of-way so that it can install a storm sewer at its station.

Amtrak 4Amtrak is also planning to rehabilitate the station, which is used by the California Zephyr, to make it ADA compliant.

“They plan to build a new inlet to their parking lot that is directly west of the depot and run a 15-inch storm sewer pipe north to the city’s storm sewer that runs east and west along A Street,” city officials told the council. “Amtrak will be responsible for all work.”

Amtrak’s legal department has sent the city an opinion expressing the belief that it is exempt from any state and/or local requirements to obtain building permits for work done on station properties.
