CUS Entrance Closed as Safety Measure

Falling concrete that severely injured a Metra passenger has prompted Amtrak to close the Madison Street entrance of Chicago Union Station.

Chicago Union StationThe falling debris also resulted in the closure of Track Nos. 5, 7, and 9 on the north concourse until a third-party operator can inspect the ceiling. The concrete chunk struck the Metra passenger in the head.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Amtrak, which owns the station, said that third-party private owners are responsible for maintaining property above the platform and tracks.

“If third-party property owners fail to inspect and maintain the property over the tracks, Amtrak will take appropriate steps to ensure public safety, including taking legal action,” Amtrak said in in a statement.

The property above the platform is owned by 10 South Riverside Plaza, which has declined to comment about the inspection matter.
